Back in the USA

Sept 19th

Check out at this park is 11am, so we woke early to hike to High Falls, a waterfall that is only accessible through the RV park. It was a 1.5 miles round trip. The falls are spectacular. The pictures do not do it justice. With Oreo sufficiently tired, we hit the road. Our plan is head into Maine to meet up with Tim and Melinda again. We stopped for lunch in Vermont. The colors are really starting to change and Vermont its beautiful. I have booked a place to stay in New Hampshire, so we didn’t have time to see much of Vermont this time. We will be back. Our GPS was having issues this morning. It was trying to get us to cross into Canada, because that would save us over an hour. It would not give us another route, and we cannot just cross back into Canada. We unplugged it and relied on the Apple Map, but that too led to some problems. We turned off of Highway 12 in Vermont, and onto 58. The road became very steep and about 5 miles further, the pavement ended. I double checked with Google Maps, and it confirmed that we were on 58, and that it would lead us to another highway, so we continued, plus there was nowhere for us to turn around. For an unpaved road, it was in very good condition and we were driving about 35 mph. It remained unpaved for over 20 miles and it was a huge relief when we hit asphalt again. New Hampshire is just as scenic as Vermont. Beautiful mountains and forests, and cool little towns. We stopped for the night near Jefferson, NH. Jefferson is known for its Christmas themed amusement park. Who knew? We are camped with an incredible view of the mountains.

Sept 20th

It is really starting to feel like fall. It was only 42 degrees this morning. Back on the road, and the scenery was still beautiful as we crossed into Maine. The last 60 miles to Lily Bay State Park, where we are meeting Tim and Melinda, had the worst roads we have driven on, ANYWHERE. The right side of the road was sliding down into the ditch and was lower than the rest of it. When I could I was driving directly on the center yellow line to avoid the horrendous bumps. The trailer took such a terrible beating, that we checked all of our systems when we arrived at the campground. No problems found so far. Tim and Melinda reserved a campsite for us, right on Moosehead Lake. It is gorgeous.

Sept 21st

Today was a school day for Mia. At about 11am, all of us except Tim, went on a hike. The trail followed along the side of the lake, and the scenery was beautiful. The hike ended at the swimming beach, two miles from where we started. There was a playground there too, and Mia found some other children to play with. Then we had to hike the two miles back to our campsite. There are lots of chipmunks, squirrels and loons, but we still haven’t seen a moose. Tomorrow I want to try and kayak to one of the many islands in the lake.

Sept 22nd

We are a little down today. Tim and Melinda are heading home, and we won’t see them again until Christmas. We said goodbye this morning and they left. We reluctantly went on with Mia’s school work. Later in the morning, we got out our kayak and paddled out onto Moosehead Lake. Mia and I went first. We kayaked out to one of the many islands in the lake, and hiked around it. It was pretty small, about 100x40 yards, but it was really cool having the island all to ourselves. When we came back, Kathy went out for a ride. After some more schooling, we hiked along the shore, all the way to the boat dock. It was pretty tough going because we were climbing around trees and over boulders. We were pretty tired tonight.

Sept 23rd

We are on the move today, and heading toward the coast. Still no moose sightings. We drove through Bangor, Maine this afternoon, and passed a radio station own by Stephen King. Of course, it plays Classic Rock. We stopped at a local liquor store, and I found some good Cabernet from Kunde Winery. Thank you, Reggie (and Margot). We will be spending the next few days on Mount Desert Island, where Acadia National Park, and Bar Harbor are located. Our new RV park is nice and has views overlooking the ocean. We met a couple from Southern California who happened to be traveling in their motorhome since July too. We talked for quite a while comparing our trips.
