Lake Huron

Aug 10th

We are on the move again today. We crossed the Mackinaw Bridge into the lower peninsula of Michigan. The fog was so thick we couldn’t see the bridge, again, just like the Golden Gate. We stopped in the town of Cheboygan for supplies and then continued south. Tonight, we are staying at Harrisville State Park, right on Lake Huron. The campground is very wooded, with lots of bike trails and a very nice beach. As soon as we were set up, we put on our suits and went for a swim in Lake Huron. We have now been swimming in 3 of the great lakes. Huron was a bit rough this afternoon, but the humidity is over 90% today, so the water felt wonderful.

Michigan has a great series of bike trails. Kathy was working today, so Melinda, Tim, Mia and I rode our bikes into Harrisville. It’s a very small town. We visited an art store, coffee house and did some grocery shopping. Humidity was high in the afternoon again, so everyone went swimming.

We parted ways with Melinda and Tim this morning. We will meet up with them again in Boston in a few weeks. Laundry was piling up, so we stopped in Tawas, MI for a few hours to take care of it. After laundry and lunch, we drove to our new campground, Seven Lakes State Park, just north of Detroit. It’s a smaller campground, but our site backs right up to one of the lakes. Apparently, the storms were really bad here last night. We couldn’t check in at the ranger station, because last night they were struck by lightning, and it fried all of their computers. There was a courtesy phone next to the ranger’s shack, and we had to check in via phone. Lucky for us there is no severe weather expected tonight. It was an amazing evening, with the crickets and frogs singing, and fireflies everywhere. The only draw back was the number of mosquitos. We could not stay outside for very long for risk of having all of our body fluids drained out of us.

The storm that struck before we arrived caused a lot of damage. As we were driving this morning, we could see several trees uprooted, and tree limbs everywhere. When we stopped of groceries in Milan, MI., there was no power to most of the town. We were told that they hadn’t had power for 2 days. I’m so glad we dodged this storm. We are staying at a Harvest Host tonight. It is a K9 training center for law enforcement. Three other motor homes arrived to stay here too. It’s kind of tight, and we are right next to Interstate 80, but there is a big open field and dogs are allowed to roam free. We originally had signed up for 2 nights here, but with the highway so close we are going to move on tomorrow.

I did worry about you when I heard of the big storm. So happy you did not run into it!
