Steamboat Lake State Park

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

July 12th

All of us hung out at the lake all day. Between our kayak and Ron and Ashley’s two paddleboards, we spent a majority of the time on the water. Even Aspen and Oreo took turns on the lake. Steamboat Lake State Park, is one of the most beautiful we have ever been to. In fact, we decided to stay one more night. The site we were in was not available for another night, so we chose one in the Dutch Hill Campground, which is an island in the lake.

We moved to our new camp site on the island, and it is the most amazing campground ever. We are on a small hill overlooking the lake. We have a path from our site down to the lake (20yds) where we can launch our kayaks. A thunder storm rolled in at about 11am and put on quite a show. The rain was so refreshing, and it took the smell of the smoke away. We had our final dinner with Ron and Ashley tonight, with the back drop of an amazing sunset.

I had another peaceful kayak run this morning. Ron, Ashley and family left this morning to head back to California. We will miss them. It has been a wonderful 3 days. Thank you, for finding this campground and inviting us to join you. Mia is going to miss Ethan and Tobin. We stopped in Craig, Co. to do laundry and get groceries. Heading north on Hwy. 13, we got stopped for road construction. There was a coyote roaming the field next to us. In a manner of minutes, the skies darkened and we were pummeled by rain and hail. After the storm passed, we followed the pilot car through the construction zone. Unfortunately, the “dirt” road had been turned into a mud path by the storm. The truck and trailer came out of the construction zone completely covered in mud. We found a free BLM campground outside of Rawlins, Wyoming, called Teton Reservoir Campground. We picked a site on a plateau overlooking the reservoir, and the sunset was beautiful, but as the sun went down a massive thunderhead moved in. Lightning started striking all around us and we turned off the light to watch it. Then the rain came, followed by the most intense hail storm I have ever seen. It hailed marble sized hail for 15 minutes straight. When it had ended, I went outside to discover three inches of hail everywhere.

We will have to access the damage in the morning, as it is dark, and Kathy doesn’t want me climbing on the roof while we are still experiencing lightning strikes.
